Lineboro Teaches Stop The Bleed to Community Members

By Member Matthew Burgan
May 11, 2019

Members from the Lineboro community and surrounding areas attended a Stop The Bleed program hosted by the Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department. The course, lead by instructors Matthew Burgan, Captain of EMS, and Nicole Nappi, EMS Lieutenant, introduced those in attendance to the importance of the Stop The Bleed Initiative. Lasting about one and a half hours, participants sat through a brief presentation that discussed the importance of Stop The Bleed, recognizing life-threatening hemorrhaging, and techniques to manage bleeding. Additionally, participants were able to practice their newly learned skills on training props purchased by the department, with life-like blood flow and injury patterns. One prop simulated how to apply a tourniquet using different techniques, while another simulated a penetrating wound and allowed the participants to practice wound packing.

May is being recognized by the American College of Surgeons as National Stop The Bleed Month. The 'Stop the Bleed' campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, with the purpose of building national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters.

For further information contact Matthew Burgan, Captain of EMS for the Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department, at 410-365-2610 or by e-mail at mburgan@lineborovfd.org
